the Andover Crew family to provide support for our younger rowers as they move into the world.
Our young men and women who have maintained good grades while spending 25 to 30
hours a week on competitive rowing at the countries top colleges have already
proved that would be valuable additions to any organization that wants to be successful.

News May 17th. 2015
Head of the Charles Regatta: Please check the Friends of Andover Crew on Facebook for details of our Alumni rowing in the Head of the Charles. At last count we had more than 34 rowers from as far back as 1963 rowing this weekend. We also have Alumni rowing in the Championship eights.
Family Weekend: Next week, Friday 23rd at 3 pm will be our open house for Family Weekend. Everyone, family, friends and alumni are invited to join us
at the boathouse to see this years batch of newbies in action.
Tail of the Merrimack: The following week we will have our annual "Tail of the Merrimack" end of season races. This is a costume dress event with each boat selecting a theme for their costumes. This year we will be inviting our friends from St. Paul's school to join in our event. Each boat
will have a mixed squad of rowers from both schools.
Fall Crew: Fall is our time to learn and improve our rowing skills. We mix and match rowers to make equal boats. We also mix boys and girls. Our goal is to have fun and create Andover rowers who will morph into Andover racers in the spring.
Spring Crew: In the spring we build racing boats. Every rower competes with every other rower to make fast boats. The more competitive our B7 or G7 then the faster our B1 or G1. Rowers move up and down the boats according to only one criteria, their ability to make boats go faster.
We are already planning a spring vacation trip to a warmer climate to prepare for the racing season. Coach Hurley will welcome parents
who want to help with this task. This is a key element to preparing racing boats for competition in the spring. It allows us to get the
more experienced boats on the water before the ice melts. If you can help please email Coach Hurley or andovercrew@andovercrew.com.

Our girls did well as Headington School had 6 UK junior team members in the boat.
Our girls four had to sratch their race because of an injury.
They did row down the course with supporters cheering them on.

Women Henley June 20th, 2015 Results
This is the first day of Women Henley.
Our girls eight race in The Peabody Cup for Junior Eights.
They won the first race.

Reading Amateur Regatta 2015
This regatta provides crews with an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the skills
and high demands of one-to-one racing.
In order to get to the final crews will have to win every heat in an event.
Our students are based in Henley, to get to Reading, they have to row the shell there.

Henley Announcement and Help
It is official: Andover Crew girls are going to Henley Women's Regatta (HWR) and the boys are
going the Henley Royal Regatta (HHR) Go Blue!! Both boys and girls are taking an eight and a four.
The girls went to the Henley Women's Regatta in 2007 and made the final. This is the only time Andover
sent an entry until this year.
The boys went to the Henley Royal Regatta in 2006 and made it to the semi-final. This is the last time
Andover sent an entry across the pond.
This year, with the support of parents and alumni, we are sending both boys
and girls as ambassadors of our rowing program and school. It can only happen with enormous parent and alumni support.

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated already to ensure that their student athletes will have the experience of their lives.
In 2006 we spent just under $40k taking a single eight. Now 9 years later we are taking 2 eights and 2 fours to Henley Women's
Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta. The budget looks just about $170k. The rowing families are contributing $80K and we have to
make up the difference of about $90k. We started on Tuesday May 26th to raise the money and we are at 78% as of yesterday. That
leaves with about $20K more to raise for the trip.
We have set up a Henley Fund account with PA.
Donations should be sent to Becca Brewster, Director of Parent Development, at Phillips Academy, 180 Main Street, Andover,
Massachusetts 01810. Becca's phone number is 978-749-4286. The check would be made out to the Trustees of Philips academy
with a designation on the check for the Henley Fund.
We are sending out an end of season email. It is going to Alumni first.

Who: All 0's and 5's and all other alumni.
What to do: Come and see how our new boathouse and row once again on the Moghty Merrimack.
You will be hosted by Coach James "Jigger" Herman and the Darbys.
The '65 Henley crew went for a row on the Merrimack, down memory lane,
all the way down to the tin shack.
They had a good time with Michelle as their cox.

the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association more than 60 years ago.

Andover Exeter Invitational at Lake Quinsigamond '15
We have a wonderful day at Lake Quinsigamond today. The weather was beautiful and the racing was awesome. We were missing some
rowers because of ACT tests today. Don't these ACT people know it is racing season? Racing at Lake Quinsigamond gives everyone a taste
of how it would feel to race at Interschols on this lake with up to 6 boats across.
We raced G1, G2, G3 & G4. G3 ad G4 raced in the G3 race. We also race B1, B2 and B4. Everyone rowed well and we did better than expected.
G1 and B4 had the largest wins today.

Racing April 4th Essex & Simsbury 2015
Today, April4th, on the Merrimack. Warm temperature, strong wind with rising gusts.
We started the day with the dedication for a new boat, Haraka 2014, for the Boys' program donated by the Arnold family.
A huge thank you to Rome and Lisa for this kind gift.
The Andover rowing program is the students and coaches with the generous support in time and money from the parents and alumni.
A few years ago we completed the boathouse project. This was followed with a new fleet of wakeless launches that made life much easier
for the coaches and provided better safety for everyone on the water. Now in the past 2 years with a fund raising program led by Cathy Rasenberger
and the generous donation from Rome and Lisa Arnold we have been able to replace 3 boats for the girls and add a new V1 racer for the boys.
Thank you to everyone who made this possible.
Today we were scheduled to race 3 visitors but Simsbury and Glastonbury had to cry off because the winter weather has delayed the
start of their season. We decided to carry on with Essex Rowing Club but Mother Nature had other ideas.
She kindly allowed us good weather for the dedication but once we tried to start the races she increased the wind and added powerful
long gusts.
After running the one race for the G1 boats, the coaches on the water made the reluctant decision to stop the racing. The students who
were already on water preparing to race were disappointed but it is much better to be safe than sorry. This is for first time in the 12 years
I have been attended races that we have had to abandon racing. Hopefully it will be another 12 years before we do it again.

Some of our rowers were lucky enough to head south to Oak Ridge Tennessee for warmer water and warmer weather. A chance to stretch those muscles
without battling the urge to tightening up to protect from the cold.
A big "thank you" to Coaches Hurley, MacDonald and Moss for making this possible. We hope we can make this a new Andover tradition. I heard a
little complaint about some mud but for those of us imprisoned in the frozen north mud is a luxury we can only enjoy in our dreams.

With the help of Neil Batt '82 and Struan Robertson '83 and a little bit of research we have put names to all the 6 pictures in the alum
section except the 1970s girls' team. We also have a couple of girls for whom I cannot trace a graduation year.
As we sit here buried in almost 3 feet of snow it seems far too early to think about Spring racing but people have started to ask about
race dates. We have posted the preliminary schedule for the Spring so we can plan our spring. Hotel space around Worcester for NEIRA is
aleady filling up. We hope and expect everyone to come and yell Go Blue! at our races. Everyone is welcome.
Preliminary Race Schedule 2015
A Happy New Year to all of the Andover Crew family. The cold weather has invaded New England and this week we have
temperatures below zero in Boston.
In New England the weather drives people off the water from around Halloween until the ice melts sometime in March. Some enthusiastic
rowers including an Andover Alum invented the idea of erging competitions that grew into the now famous Crash-Bs.
Before Christmas some of the rowers gathered to benchmark their erg skills. Andover rowers do other sports in the winter term. The
program encourages teenagers to have multiple sports. It would be interesting to see which winter sports are the most compatible
with building strength and stamina for rowing.
Fall Crew 2014
Tail of the Merrimack
Another year's batch of newbies have survived the fall term on the Merrimack.
All good things have to come to an end and so it is with fall crew. But what an end! A costume day on the river with 5 races and 12 boats. We
had 3 heats plus A and B finals on full buoyed course. A taste of spring racing. The boats were mixed ability and mixed sex. They were selected
ahead of time to allow boat fancy dress. We had ghosts, crabs and unicorn to name a few. Much fun was had by all. The racing trophy winners
were the Crabs. They also won the best spirit and the best costume went to the Unicorns.
For some the end of the week did not come soon enough. These students will have discovered that rowing is not for them. For others the
end of the this week and the end of fall crew has come all too soon. For these students the cold, the pain, the relentless hard work
has been a welcome relief from the stress of the academic boot camp we call school. These students have found the peace and pleasure of
pushing past their limits in the battle with the Merrimack. They will suffer cabin fever waiting for the chance to break the ice on
the river for spring racing.

The Spirit of Andover Crew
Crew is a little different from other sports. All the students, boys and girls, everyone from varsity first boat to the sixth
boat, train together, practice together, race together. Everyone jumps on the same bus for the bone-rattling
trip to the boathouse. Everyone helps with the launches. Everyone shares the same cold wet days on the Merrimack.
Everyone shares the same pain, the same pleasure. Everyone will have the same joy as the boat starts to sync and
the speed increases. There is no individual effort. There is no individual glory. Only one boat, eight rowers, one coxswain,
one shell. A racing boat.
Below is a multimedia section including a video of this year's (07) interschols, Michelle's call and video from Henley '06 and
a documentary video about Andover crew made by Katherine Adams '06. Recently we have noticed people referring to Andover crew
as a world class program. The shallow reason for such an accolade is probably the recent racing performance such as B1 with
two silvers and a gold and G1 with three silvers in the last three New England Championships. We think the program is
world class because of the spirit of Andover crew down through all 12 boats. We hope the videos below will help you visit
again with the spirit of Andover crew.

Abingdon Race Henley '06 - Michelle's Coxswain's Call:
You can feel the spirit as you listen to this race from Henley '06. Abingdon, one of the top English schools, used
their fantastic start to take an early lead of over a boat length. Lesser crews would have crumbled. Andover clawed
back into the race and then pulled off a tremendous sprint to take the victory.

General Information
Coaches:
Coach Dale Hurley Director of Andover Crew.
Dale joined us in 2006 and has been a inspiration to our young rowers ever since with his famous launch cry of
"What do you do when you are not having fun?" "PULL HARDER". He came to the program with coaching experience
at Blair Academy, University of Pennsylvania, University of Tennessee, and the US Naval Academy built on top
of a successful rowing career that included being a 5 time member of the U.S National Lightweight Rowing team.
This past 2 years he ran a very enthusiastic girls program that improved their Interschols results. For the prior 3
years his B3 boats won gold at all three the New England Championships.
The goal is to inspire happy rowers to learn to row in the fall and win the New England Championship in the spring. We
all wish Dale and his team every success.
Coach Stewart MacDonald P'13 coxed for Belmont Hill, Wisconsin and the US National team at the Olympics
in '68 and '72. He has coached at Kent, Belmont Hill, Boston University and the USA national team and most recently as a
guest coach with our championship girls' team in 2011. He also coached Dale Hurley on the national team for 4 years. In
2014 he coached the boys to gold at Interschols.
Coach James (Jigger) Herman '81 is an Andover graduate. Jigger rowed at Andover and as a lightweight at Yale. This
Spring is his third season coaching at Andover. Jigger was instrumental in laying out the race course at our new boathouse.
Coach Herman will be coaching boys.
Coach Richard Kennelly P'13 rowed for Harvard graduating in '87 and won a silver medal in the '88 Olympics
and a 4th place in the '92 Olympics. Richard was a constant supporter of the crew program as a parent and we are delighted to
have him back as coach.
Coach Bob Moss, aka Coach Rambo, started coaching crew at St. Andrews' School in Delaware in 1973, and coached our
girls at Andover with great passion and success from 1984 to 2007. His love of the river and the program has drawn him back
from retirement for a continuing encore performance. We are overjoyed to have him back.
Coach Catherine Kemp rowed for Dartmouth and has continued her life-long passion for the sport by rowing with the
Dartmouth alumni. Cath is also an active USRowing licensed referee and has been working with the girls. Cath is an
instructor in biology.
Coach Ed Ford was captain of the Brown Crew in 1974 and continues to compete at the masters level today. He has extensive
experience in teaching sculling to beginners and will be helping with the program.
Coach Yue Cao is a teaching fellow in Mathematics and helping the crew program this spring.
Coach Brendan Mackinson is a teaching fellow in Chemistry and helping out on the Merrimack this spring.

Coach Peter Washburn - Andover Crew 1981 to 2014
We owe a huge thank you to Pete Washburn and his wife Kit for the last 33 years. Thanks for all the boats that raced at
Interschols, Youth Nationals and Henley Royal Regatta but most importantly thanks for being a wonderful coach and mentor
to generations of Andover rowers and coxswains.

is run by Parents, Friends and Alums of Andover Crew to inform and involve parents and alums in the Andover Crew program.
The FALL crew season is the time for fun. Many new students have never been in a rowing boat.
The experienced and novice students are mixed together in a process that starts with lots of splashing and little speed through the water.
The teams progress with advice and encouragement from the coaches as well as laughter and hard work from the students.
Eventually every boat is powering through the water with every oar moving as though the rowers were part of one being.
Students who used to run inside at the first drop of rain will soon be happily braving even snow showers for the opportunity to spend the afternoon on the river.
Hard to believe? Come and see!
Your students will soon be speaking a new language. You too can learn a little more or understand their new vocabulary
Rowing requires great skill and co-ordination. Here are some extra challenges that a student can try during the school vacation.
What about Sculling ?
The program has about 100 girls and boys. They row mostly 'eights' and a few 'fours'
Everyday they are bused to and from the boathouse on the Merrimack River.
There is an incredible camaraderie amongst the crew students.
Maybe it is the daily bus journey, maybe the shared battle with the elements, maybe the fact that crew is a true team effort?
Maybe it is just the shared experience of a few hours together away from the pressure of schoolwork?
It is a pleasure to see this happy relaxed group working hard and having fun together.
Spring term is racing season. The competitive spirit kicks in as they start training for races.
Andover competes against schools from all over the North East such as Exeter, Kent, NMH, St Paul's, St. John's, Tabor and others.
Andover also competes at the New England Interscholastic Regatta (NEIRA) in May.
Spring is also the time for parents and friends to join in with practical help and support.
The Saturday races are almost full day events with Andover fielding from 6 to 10 boats against the competition.
Supporters travel to the races and provide our teams with food and drink throughout the day.
If you have been to any of the races, you will know the extraordinary amount of nourishment required to support a hard racing team.
The support and encouragement of the parents and fellow racers contributes greatly to the team.
The races are also fun events for students and parents together.
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come, even if you can only make it to one of the races.
If you live far away you can make a contribution that will be used to provide the food for the races and the end of season barbecue.
Apart from the school website, this website is the primary source for information. For more interactive and immediate news we have a Facebook
group "Friends of Andover Crew". For real time race results we use a twitter account called "andovecrew". We have also started a Linkedin
group called "Andover Crew". Membership of these groups is open to Parents, Friends and Alumni of Andover Crew.
Over the years parents and friends have also supported the program with donations of equipment. In the past few years donations have
paid for trips overseas, new ergs, new docks, launches and of course new racing boats. With up to 6 racing boats for each of the boys
and girls, the hand-me-down boats are pretty old and battered by the time they reach the lower boats even if they are passed on every
couple of years. The process needs new boats every 2 to 3 years.
In recent years we have added a number of new boats for the girls. This past spring we added new boats to the boys program
thanks to very generous donations from parents of both boys and girls. Over the winter we had 4 new erg machines donated. All this while
we have been raising money for a new boathouse.
At the very least, crew will allow your student to have fun, exercise, make new friends and learn a new skill.
It may also be the start of a life long passion.

Training and Fun
Some guidance for the art of erging with skill and style.
Read and inwardly digest this guidance and then do the complete opposite and you will have perfection!
Now that the crews are on the water, some people will be catching crabs.
If you are going to do something, you might as well excel at it.
Here are instructions for catching a really good crab!

Diet is very important for all of us. Strenuous sports such as Crew add an extra dimension to diet planning. Eating
properly is essential for good health. Some useful advice for rowers and parents bringing food to races can be found
in this Training diet guide link. Staying healthy should be the first priority.

Strokes thru' the ages
I know we have many alumni who go weepy eyed at the sight of an old wooden boat and cannot believe that the
feather light modern oars can propel a boat at speed. Michael Callahan of the Universiy of Washington has written an
interesting article comparing the stroke used in 1949 with that of today. To see this article

Parental Support
In the Fall our duty as parents is to make supporting,
understanding nods at the comments that crew is "awesome", "tough", "exhilarating" and of course pretend that we
understand the new language.
We must not comment on the new found appetites, tendency to dress in layers and almost complete immunity to the weather.
In Spring the racing season offers a direct opportunity for parents to participate.
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend the race meetings and yell "GO BLUE".
The students really appreciate the loyal band of supporters to cheer them to victory.
The races are exhilarating, exhausting and appetite creating and that is just for the supporters.
Over the duration of the race meeting, the parents provide a hospitality table for our athletes to quench their thirst
and quell their hunger after a hard race.
We can have up to 120 hungry students to feed. You would be amazed at the amount of food consumed.
Our athletes are very serious about what they eat before and after a race.
It appears they really listen to all the comments about healthy eating that you thought had fallen on deaf ears.

In Spring we publish a sample menu for the food table. Everyone can join in by bringing food or making a donation to purchase food.

To make every race a fun filled success we need loads of help from parent volunteers. Parents can bring food, organize the food table, take pictures, send twitter results and even
write up rce day reports for the website. Every little bit of help makes the boats go faster.

The most important thing parents can do is provide encouragement and, if possible,
come to support the students at Parents Weekend in the Fall and the races in the Spring.
A crew program needs good equipment to be competitive. The Andover crew program has also benefited over the past 50 years
from parent and alumni donations. Much of our equipment has been acquired with these donations.
Hence the funny names on the boats -- "Pete and Jerry", Cashin. Lone Star and Coach Moss.
When crews have won the right to attend the Henley Regatta in London, it has only been possible with the generous donations of parents
and alumni to pay for a trip that will be remembered for a lifetime.

1. Cooking lunch for the kids on the team is like cooking for a small village.
2. The people from the Child Abuse Prevention Center keep calling about the cuts and bruises on the backs of your child's legs.
3. Standing in the rain and mud on Saturdays in April is much better than relaxing at home.
4. What the hell is a unisuit?
5. Your kids haven't gone to bed this early since they were two years old.
6. You can personally keep Johnson & Johnson in business by buying Band-Aids, gauze, and Neosporin for all their blisters.

Take I-93 North or South to Exit 46 (Route 110/Route 113 toward Lawrence/Dracut)

Take the Lowell Street/Route 110 exit out of the traffic circle (it is the third exit if coming from I-93 north; it is the first exit if coming from I-93 south)

Andover crew Hats - THE definitive fashion statement this Spring
We have re-ordered Andover Crew hats. Every rower and coach will a free hat before Grandparents' Weekend. Over 130 hats. Additional hats
have been purchased for parents, friends and alumni of Andover Crew. These hats are available for a donation of $15 plus
postage if required. Wear your hat when you visit the campus to show your support for the crew program.
When we reach a 150 donations, we will have covered the cost of the hats for the rowers.
If you would like a hat please email andovercrew@andovercrew.net. We will email you donation instructions.
The hats are lightweight with a built in sweat band.:
