Sample quotes from the Alums:
(with slight editing)
"I can't begin to put into words the overwhelmingly positive influence my time on and off the water with my boatmates and coaches had on me while at Andover, and to this day. The lessons of hard work, determination, dedication, teamwork and individual achievement transcend the gunwales and stay with me through all endeavours, large and small."
"I coxed for Peter and it was undoubtedly one of the most important building blocks during my years in formation."
" Many of my fondest memories of Andover concern crew, and for years I had the recurring dream that I had somehow managed to return to Andover to row. I had great admiration for Coach Brown as a coach and as a person. I remember him as a man of great dignity and warmth. My senior year was the year one of our shells blew off the top of a car and shattered on the Interstate. He handled the situation with poise and grace."
"I miss the Andover rowing family and would love to re-connect with coaches and teammates. The day Coach Kathryn "Luc" Green introduced me to crew changed my life. I rowed all four years at Penn and the friendships, discipline, and experiences I had through rowing has helped to define my life! "
"I was captain of that first crew that Bill Brown coached, and I remember very well the agony of trying to raise a crew among 750 men who had never rowed before...I remember that our stroke, who was an Englishman, weighed in at 148 pounds and in one of our first practices, he caught a crab and was lifted out of the boat into the coldest water I can remember ...but I certainly have a strong pride in the crew program that Bill Brown had envisioned."
"I had a great time rowing second boat at Andover, although it was my off-season sport after swimming, and I remember Bill Brown, who was also my housemaster for my Upper year, with great affection."
"You're right, I was the first cox of the third boat in my Junior year (the old Harvard scow which was warped in the middle so it was impossible to balance), and then went on to bow in the second boat (the Princeton boat as I remember; never could gain enough weight to get into the first boat). Things were pretty loose in the old days of the Lawrence boathouse just above the dam. I still dream of setting the oar in the water and laying back"
"In 2000 I was inspired by my rowing experience at Andover to found Wayland-Weston Crew, the interscholastic rowing team for student-athletes at Wayland and Weston, MA high schools. Even before we owned our first boat, Pete Washburn has been a source of guidance and inspiration to us. Last fall our BV and GV eights won the Mass. Public Schools Fall Championships at Lake Quinsigamond."
"Please give the coaches at Andover my sincere thanks for letting us have fun while working our butts off. I enjoyed every moment of it!"
" I loved rowing with the girls at Andover and because of my experience there it led me not only to Princeton but to the national team and hopefully to some future olympic games, so in that respect I am eternally indebted to andover crew."
"Thank you (Bill Brown) for all that fun, especially in 1958-1959. I remember those days after school ended in 1959, when we were rowing on the upper Merriment, sometimes past the old, abandoned mills of Lowell...We were practicing for Henley, rowing at an incredibly low rate, and the boat was skimming through the water. I remember your crew cut, and your cigarette hanging out of the side of your mouth, and your very quiet, effective way of coaching."
These are a few samples of the messages from alumni over the past few months. The passion echoes through the ages and lives on in the hearts of our young rowers today.
